NOVEMBER 30TH - NIGHTMARES - HOUSE OF DUST

IMDB Summary: College students exploring an abandoned insane asylum accidentally shatter canisters holding the cremains of former mental patients. Inhaling the dusty ash filling the air, they're soon possessed by the souls once held within them. One is a convicted serial killer from 1950. IMDB

Tonight's special was an old movie that I had the DVD of since.. maybe this summer and have never watched. Since I have an obsession with scary movies, I love going to places like Disc Replay or even a Family Video and see what movies they are selling for cheap. So this movie was one of those pickups and I hadn't watched it yet. I would put this movie in the paranormal thriller category.

This story is an interesting plot line of a girl who used to be in a mental institution who goes off to college. Shes on medication for her crazy thoughts and hallucinations but no one really knows about it. So she makes friends and they all go to the abandoned mental hospital and they all come out different. They are trying to make themselves normal again.

Honestly, even though I expected it, this movie was super cheesy. I would've placed it lower with my ratings but the plot line is unique, original, and entertaining and that;s why I kept watching. Probably wouldn't recommend unless you're a big fan like me!

NOVEMBER 23RD - NIGHTMARES - THE INVITATION

IMDB Summary: While attending a dinner party at his former home, a man thinks his ex-wife and her new husband have sinister intentions for their guests. IMDB

Tonight's special was a movie I found after doing research on some good scary movies that are on Netflix. I found this one called The Invitation that I would put in the thriller category.

This movie is about a couple (Will & Kira) who get invitations to a dinner party from friends they haven't seen in years.  The friends happens to be Will's ex-wife. When they arrive they realize that these people have invited a ton of people they are close to who have all experienced something tragic such as the loss of a loved one. Throughout the party Will catches onto the fact that something really isn't right with this group of people and talks of a cult keep coming up. He's battling the embarrassment of worrying about the party and the inner feeling telling him something is wrong and has to figure out what to do before the night unfolds.

This movie was quite interesting to watch, however, super predictable. The movie could've honestly been 15 minutes long but it dragged out and kept repeating itself over and over again every scene. The ending was expected and I wasn't really shocked with any of the "plot twists". I will say though I think some of the people in this movie were spectacular actors. Although the plot line was a bit amateur the acting wasn't. I probably wouldn't watch it again and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

NOVEMBER 16TH - NIGHTMARES - ARRIVAL

IMDB Summary:A linguist is recruited by the military to assist in translating alien communications. IMDB

Tonight's special was a movie that I've  been looking forward to seeing for awhile. I would put Arrival in the scyfy thriller category. Normally I'm not super into scyfy/fantasy stuff but I saw a lot of trailers and I got excited and interested to see it.

Arrival stars Amy Adams as a college professor who teaches about linguistics. She's familiar with every language, even those dating back before English was developed. One morning, during her class she finds out that there is a worldwide panic because 12 unidentified ships of some sort have landed in random places across the globe. While every one goes into a panic, a general of the army shows up at her office to recruit her to talk to these "aliens". They fly her there and have her interact with the aliens trying to figure out their purpose on earth. There's a lot of plot twists and the final twist will either leave you extremely confused or sum it all up and make perfect sense. You gotta pay attention close to figure it out.

I LOVED THIS MOVIE. Seriously one of the best scyfy movies I've seen. They did an excellent job of making it realistic, scaring the crap out of you, confusing you throughout, while also having you leave in wonder of what you just watched. I definitely recommend.

NOVEMBER 9TH - NIGHTMARES - INFERNO

When Robert Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Dr. Sienna Brooks, and together they must race across Europe against the clock to foil a deadly global plot.IMDB

Tonight the boyfriend and I went to go see the new movie Inferno. This movie is a third installment of a popular written novel series. The first movie was The Da Vinci Code and the second movie was Angels & Demons. Both of those films were very well done so I was interested to see if this one was as good.

This movie stars Tom Hanks as the Professor Robert Langdon who was also the main character in the two other films. Langdon wakes up in a hospital and meets a young woman named Sienna. He slowly starts to figure out something is wrong when the police arrive to "talk to him" and immediately start shooting at him. The whole movie is based on a man who bioengineered a deadly plague that if released would kill 95% of the worlds population in a matter of a month. The creator of the virus wanted to create a new world order where we could start over again and get rid of all the problems caused by overpopulation. Langdon has to figure out who is most truthful and who to trust as he tries to stop the virus from getting released.

All I can say is WOW. Such a good movie. Tom Hanks is obviously excellent as always which helps. However this movie's plot line is what really made it great. The amount of crazy twists and turns keep you on the edge of your seat in suspense. It is quite confusing but for someone who loves movies you really have to figure out it was great. My boyfriend on the other hand spent most of the movie asking "okay wait I'm confused whats happening now? who are the good guys?" which was quite hilarious. This movie also made me think about the incredible reality of a mass plague killing off the world. The amount of shows they have created off this idea really make you wonder.

NOVEMBER 2ND - NIGHTMARES - LIGHTS OUT

IMDB Summary: When her little brother, Martin, experiences the same events that once tested her sanity, Rebecca works to unlock the truth behind the terror, which brings her face to face with an entity that has an attachment to their mother, Sophie.

Tonight's movie was one that gained a lot of popularity when it came out on social media for its super creepy trailers, Lights Out. This movie would be in the horror category for sure, with its choice of scares.

This movie is based around a mother of two children who has some mental issues. Rebecca the older daughter left the house when she started experiencing and seeing things in the house. Rebecca gets a phone call from CPS when her little brother Martin falls asleep in class every day. If an effort to get Martin out of the house Rebecca brings him to her house. They start to realize that the messed up things that are "haunting" their insane mother are just figments of their imagination. It's a real girl named Diana.

This movie started out amazing. They played on such a good fear of whats in the dark. The fact that Diana can only be seen in the dark is honestly a terrifying thing to imagine. She resembles the "Grudge girl" or the "Ring girl", with her dark figure, long black hair over her face. Every person's nightmare of an entity that creeps out from your closet or from under your bed. One that crawls, runs, and stands taller than you when you're side by side. The scares throughout this movie were fantastic. They made you jump, want to stop watching the movie, and look around the room to make sure nothing is watching with you. However, the ending ruined the movie for me.

With the ending of the movie ending Diana for good, it made me leave the movie pretty bummed and thinking about what the movie could've been. I didn't wonder if she was gonna be in my room, and if she was going to haunt me later. If you keep up with my blog then you know thats my favorite part of scary movies so because of that it definitely bumped my rating down a few points.

OCTOBER 26TH - NOURISHMENT & NIGHTMARES - QDOBA & AMERICAN HORROR STORY 6

IMDB Summary: An anthology series that centers on different characters and locations, including a murder house, an asylum, a coven, a freak show, a hotel and a sinister farmhouse. IMDB

So tonight I decided to give a review now that I am caught up and am half way through this series. I will give a final thoughts review at the end of the series as well. For my meal tonight, I picked up Qdoba on the way home from work. I am a huge Qdoba fan, Chipotle falls waaaaaay behind. I get nachos with my chips on the side, which is basically a dip. I get queso, ground beef, pico de gallo, cheese, and guacamole.

As for this season so far... I'm shook. I cannot believe how this has gone so far because the plot is so intertwined. At this point half way through it is a show, within a show, within a show. So there's three separate shows that you kind of have to keep up with and try to remember who is who. So far I'm loving it, its extremely intense, kinda screwed up and seriously keeps you on the edge of your seat. It also makes you think a lot. My friends and I could not stop saying "OMG WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF THAT WAS YOU", and that's my absolute favorite thing with scary movies.

Overall they have sone a great job with this season so far so I am thrilled to see where they go from here. There's a lot of questions and things to wrap up at the end so I hope they do a great job with the end of it.

October 19TH - NOURISHMENT & NIGHTMARES - TONTINO'S & THE UNINVITED

IMDB Summary: Anna Ivers returns home to her sister Alex after a stint in a mental hospital, though her recovery is jeopardized thanks to her cruel stepmother. Her dismay quickly turns to horror when she is visited by ghastly visions of her dead mother. IMDB

Tonight's special is an old favorite of mine. The Uninvited was one of the first scary movies I ever saw and tonight I just felt like re-watching it. I would put this into a horror/thriller category. It is your stereotypical horror movie about demonic possession and mental illness. To go along with the movie, I chose a wonderful late night snack, Totino's Sausage pizza. If those pizzas don't scream college.. idk what does.

This movie is one where you will leave going "What the heck? Why didn't I see that coming?". It's a story of a girl named Anna who is in a mental hospital after the loss of her sick mother. The mother became terminally ill and the family moved her to the boat house, just off of the main house. One night, gas leaked into the boat house and it caught on fire, killing the mother. When Anna returns from the hospital, she comes home to her mother's nurse (Rachel), who is now her dad's new girlfriend. She has a hard time grasping this and feels like there's something seriously wrong going on. Anna and her sister Alex go on an investigation of Rachel's past and find out some really weird things. One night, while the father goes away, the situation turns ugly. You'll have to watch to see the twist at the end.. I promise you won't know what's coming.

In my opinion, this is a greaaaat movie. There are plenty of typical jumpy scares throughout. Even though I wouldn't say this movie haunted me later, the twist KILLED ME and I was so shook that I went home thinking about it for awhile. They did a great job with special effects and not making it too cheesy. I also feel as though the plot line is quite realistic and you could think about it happening in your own life.

OCTOBER 12TH - NIGHTMARES - THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN

IMDB Summary: A divorcee becomes entangled in a missing persons investigation that promises to send shock waves throughout her life. IMDB

For today's special I watched the movie The Girl On The Train. Once again, I should be honest by saying, I read the book before seeing this movie. So I might be biased however, my view on this movie is quite a bit different from my last post. I would classify this movie into the Thriller/Mystery category.

The main character Rachel (Emily Blunt) is recently divorced from her husband Tom who has gotten remarried to the woman he cheated on Rachel with, Anna. Rachel becomes an alcoholic, loses her job and doesn't really have a purpose in life. In an effort to hide from her roommate that she lost her job, every day Rachel gets on the train goes into the city, wanders around, then takes the train home. Rachel becomes infatuated with a couple who lives in a house off of the train tracks. One night she gets quite drunk and wanders onto their street because this couple only lives two houses away from Tom and Anna. Rachel wakes up the next morning and doesn't remember what happened. Then in the local news she finds out that the girl she has been infatuated with (Megan) is missing. Rachel gets herself wrapped up in the investigation in an effort to remember what happened that night and find out who is to blame.

First of all.. SUCH A GOOD BOOK. Seriously it keeps you on your toes throughout. This movie, honestly I can't believe I'm saying this, really lived up to the book. Sure there were parts I wish they would've added in and they changed some small things. But overall they did such a good job with this movie. For someone who read the book I wasn't disappointed. I also felt as though if you went and saw the movie without reading the book, although it is a bit confusing, they do a really good job of explaining whats going on so you understand by the end. I'm so happy this movie turned out so great.

OCTOBER 5TH - NIGHTMARES - THE 5TH WAVE

IMDB Summary: Four waves of increasingly deadly alien attacks have left most of Earth decimated. Cassie is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother. IMDB

Tonight I watched the movie, The 5th Wave. To be completely fair and honest I read the book before seeing the movie so I might have a very different opinion than a lot of people who maybe didn't read it. This movie falls into more of an action/scyfy but it was still a thriller so I decided to include it.

This movie is about an alien race that arrives on Earth and starts taking out the human population with waves. The first wave is a loss of power, not just electricity, cars stopped working, planes stopped flying, etc. The second wave was natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes. The third wave was a disease spread through birds which killed you from the inside out. The four wave was the alien race inhabiting human bodies and killing humans. The fifth wave you figure out in the book/movie. The main character Cassie is in a constant battle to stay alive and keep her five year old brother Sammy alive.

Overall, I loved the book. It was extremely realistic and really made you think about how it would play out if something like this were to happen. But the movie didn't quite match up to the book's greatness (are we shocked though?). The movie changed things around and I don't think it was well explained. The plot line is super confusing and complicated even with all of the explaining in the book that I felt like if I were a person not having read the book I wouldn't have understood the movie. I would love to hear someone's opinion who didn't read the book on the movie because there was a lot more they should've added. However, the movie was good for the most part, it kept you on edge and the actors chosen were great.

SEPTEMBER 28TH - NOURISHMENT & NIGHTMARES - ICE CREAM & CONJURING 2

Lorraine and Ed Warren travel to north London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by a malicious spirit. IMDB

For tonight's choice of movie I went with something I've actually watched once or twice before, Conjuring 2. My snack of choice was, my favorite, the Toll House brand chocolate chip cookie sandwich. These are my FAVORITE ice cream choice. Alright now back to the movie... for those of you who are scary movie lovers, I'm sure you saw the first Conjuring, because of its extreme popularity. The first movie was right up my alley, exactly the kind of scary movie I like because it kept you terrified throughout, then had you leaving worrying about if you were going to sleep that night.

As for this movie, it stars the same couple from the first movie Lorraine and Ed Warren. They travel overseas to a house in London where they are claiming a child is being possessed. The family has been experiencing really weird things and they want answers. When the Warren couple get there they find out that the resident before this family was an old man who died in the house. This is the spirit that's haunting the family. There are a few twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat and make you think a bit.

For my personal opinion, the story line went in wayyyyy too many directions. First the spirit was the old man, then it was "the crooked man", then after that it was a nun. Overall it was too much to handle. I felt like the writers didn't really know what direction to go in so they incorporated all three. Besides the weird plot line, the scares in the movie are terrifying. The nun is something that a lot of people are still talking about, because of her creepy look and horrifying scenes. The problem again for me, is that since the movie really wrapped up all the answers in the end, I didn't leave freaked out. It was a super entertaining movie then I went home and just thought.. "okay.. thats it?" In my opinion, they could've ended it a few other ways that would've been freakier.

SEPTEMBER 21ST - NOURISHMENT & NIGHTMARES - MCDONS & 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE

image1.JPG

IMDB Summary: After getting in a car accident, a woman is held in a shelter with two men, who claim the outside world is affected by a widespread chemical attack. IMDB

Today I chose McDonald's with an excellent syfy scary movie. Although me eating McDonald's is completely normal, watching syfy movies usually aren't common for me. Usually I find them to be unrealistic and therefore they don't really "haunt" me. However, this movie did a great job of being realistic and believable.

This movie starts off with the main character, Michelle, leaving her fiancĂ© and getting into a car crash. She wakes up in a cell with two other people in this underground bunker. The owner of the bunker (and the guy who caused her crash) is named Howard. He is a typical "prepper", you know, those people who spend their time preparing for the end of the world. He builds this insane bunker with running water, electricity, and more food than I even have in my kitchen (broke college student problems). In this bunker is Howard, Michelle and then another random character Emmett. You end up getting pretty attached to Emmett even though they fail at giving information on his background. Howard explains there was an attack and that they can't go outside, everyone is dead, and the air is toxic. Michelle and Emmett start questioning this Howard guy. The rest of the movie consists of these two trying to escape outside and see what's going on.

There are quite a few jumpy scares that keep you entertained, along with the constant curiosity of what the heck is going on outside that keeps them in this bunker. On top of that, another fear would be, is this Howard guy really who he says he is? All in all, I thought it was a pretty creepy movie. It was realistic as far as story line. The "monsters" on the outside aren't unrealistic and the plot of them cutting off power and making the air toxic is probably pretty accurate to what would happen if we were actually attacked by an alien force.

SEPTEMBER 14TH - NIGHTMARES - AMERICAN HORROR STORY 6

IMDB Summary: An anthology series that centers on different characters and locations, including a house with a murderous past, an insane asylum, a witch coven, a freak show, and an enigmatic hotel. IMDB

Today of course, I had to watch the Season 6 premiere of American Horror Story (AHS). This is an extremely popular TV series with each season being a completely new story/plot. Personally, my favorite seasons were the first two and I think they have fallen off since then. However, this season and its theme have been kept a complete secret, and frankly, even after watching I'm still unsure of the theme.

This season seems to be a replica of a ghost hunters type TV show where the "victims" of the attack/haunting narrate the story while they have "actors" reenact what happened. The theme seems to be "My Roanoke Nightmare". If you don't know anything about Roanoke and "The Lost Colony" here's a blurb on it and the link below to learn more:

"The Roanoke Colony, also known as the Lost Colony, was established on Roanoke Island in what is today's Dare County, North Carolina, United States. It was a late 16th-century attempt by Queen Elizabeth I to establish a permanent English settlement. The colony was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh. The colonists disappeared during the Anglo-Spanish War, three years after the last shipment of supplies from England. Their disappearance gave rise to the nickname "The Lost Colony." There has been no conclusive evidence as to what happened to the colonists." WIKI

This is based off of true events and the story has always terrified me. They made a scary movie in 2010 based off of this idea and putting it in modern times.. it was so creepy. 2010 Movie So I'm guessing they are using this theme and doing a "this colony was never lost" kind of thing. I'm pretty excited for this, I think its different and it a little bit scarier knowing it was based on the true events of the Roanoke stories. I felt like throughout the premiere I was definitely jumping and scared. Along with that, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it.. which is just the kind of thing I like.

Although I don't know what the rest of this season is like, I'll rate the premiere.

SEPTEMBER 7TH - NIGHTMARES - DON'T BREATHE

IMBD Summary:  Hoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn't as helpless as he seems. IMDB

Today I chose the movie Don't Breathe. This movie has been extremely well advertised and has become very popular, so I was excited to see it. Once again, I would put this movie in the "Thriller" category because its not quite horror and not quite action, its got a bit of both. This movie is full of outward jumps and the story line makes you leave sick to your stomach.

The movie is about three teenagers who spend their time stealing from the rich and selling items for money. They find out there's a old man in a house in a deserted neighborhood (of course its deserted), who was a war veteran. This man is sitting on about $300k from a settlement over a young girl killing his daughter in a motor accident. The three teens (Alex, Money, and Rocky) watched over his house for a few days and learned that he had a pretty vicious dog and duh duh duh.. hes blind. They decide to go for it one night and they didn't expect what happens next. The old man spends the night hunting them throughout the house and they find out some very screwed up secrets.

Overall, I really liked the movie. I was terrified and on edge throughout and had no idea what was going to happen next. I found myself thinking about what I would do in the situation and was basically yelling at the screen (yeah I'm that person). Although this won't continue to haunt me I found myself analyzing the movie in my head. Normally in horror movies you know exactly who the villian is and why they are the way they are, but not this movie. In the beginning, I was rooting for the old man cause he's a blind veteran and why would someone ever want to steal from him. But throughout the movie I changed back and forth on who is worse the old man or the teens. Definitely worth the watch.

AUGUST 31ST - NIGHTMARES - WOULD YOU RATHER?

IMDB Summary: Desperate to help her ailing brother, a young woman unknowingly agrees to compete in a deadly game of "Would You Rather," hosted by a sadistic aristocrat. IMDB

For tonight's special, I chose a movie that I would put in the "Thriller" category. The best comparison I could make for this movie is to relate it to the Saw movies. (God how many are there now? Like 20?) This movie lacks in both outward jumps and any sort of what I call "stay with you" horror.

This movie stars Brittany Snow, the beautiful and not extremely talented actress, who tends to find herself in quite a few horror movies. (She, however, was great in "John Tucker Must Die") Iris (Brittany Snow) is the sister to a boy with cancer. Both parents died in an awful accident and left the children to fend for themselves while leaving behind their crippling debt. In the beginning of the movie, Iris struggles to find a job and make ends meet, and also finds out her brother needs bone marrow for which shes, of course, not a match. His doctor brings her in to meet Shepard Lambrick, (Jeffery Combs) who is a sadistic rich douche who wants to "help the helpless". Shepard explains to her that she is invited to his dinner with some others who are less fortunate to play a game, "a contest", where only one can win and the winner gets whatever they want (money). The "game" ends up being a messed up game of "Would you Rather?", where they choose between awful fates for themselves or others at the party.

Here's the first problem, I'm not the biggest fans of gory movies. My favorite genre is the "paranormal" type if you will. So I immediately was grossed out by the horrible things they had to do (stab each other, whip each other, light a firecracker in their hand, razor blade their eyeball). It was just wayyyyyyy too much for me to handle. I found myself getting up and walking out when things went down because frankly... its horrible. This movie is extremely predictable, however, I think it works well for this movie. Throughout the movie you know exactly what is going to happen next, but the ending completely throws you off guard. It does a good job of making you wonder throughout the movie what you would do in that situation. But like I said, it lacks in the "stay with you" part. This movie won't continue to haunt me or keep me up at night, which again is opposite of my favorite type of horror movie. It's extremely unrealistic, but I believe its a good group scary movie that won't actually scare you, but will appeal to pretty much the whole crowd watching.

Personally I think Brittany Snow did a better job in "Prom Night". But hey that's just me.

My Rating: 5/10
