IMDB Summary: Desperate to help her ailing brother, a young woman unknowingly agrees
to compete in a deadly game of "Would You Rather," hosted by a sadistic
aristocrat. IMDB
For tonight's special, I chose a movie that I would put in the "Thriller" category. The best comparison I could make for this movie is to relate it to the Saw movies. (God how many are there now? Like 20?) This movie lacks in both outward jumps and any sort of what I call "stay with you" horror.
This movie stars Brittany Snow, the beautiful and not extremely talented actress, who tends to find herself in quite a few horror movies. (She, however, was great in "John Tucker Must Die") Iris (Brittany Snow) is the sister to a boy with cancer. Both parents died in an awful accident and left the children to fend for themselves while leaving behind their crippling debt. In the beginning of the movie, Iris struggles to find a job and make ends meet, and also finds out her brother needs bone marrow for which shes, of course, not a match. His doctor brings her in to meet Shepard Lambrick, (Jeffery Combs) who is a sadistic rich douche who wants to "help the helpless". Shepard explains to her that she is invited to his dinner with some others who are less fortunate to play a game, "a contest", where only one can win and the winner gets whatever they want (money). The "game" ends up being a messed up game of "Would you Rather?", where they choose between awful fates for themselves or others at the party.
Here's the first problem, I'm not the biggest fans of gory movies. My favorite genre is the "paranormal" type if you will. So I immediately was grossed out by the horrible things they had to do (stab each other, whip each other, light a firecracker in their hand, razor blade their eyeball). It was just wayyyyyyy too much for me to handle. I found myself getting up and walking out when things went down because frankly... its horrible. This movie is extremely predictable, however, I think it works well for this movie. Throughout the movie you know exactly what is going to happen next, but the ending completely throws you off guard. It does a good job of making you wonder throughout the movie what you would do in that situation. But like I said, it lacks in the "stay with you" part. This movie won't continue to haunt me or keep me up at night, which again is opposite of my favorite type of horror movie. It's extremely unrealistic, but I believe its a good group scary movie that won't actually scare you, but will appeal to pretty much the whole crowd watching.
Personally I think Brittany Snow did a better job in "Prom Night". But hey that's just me.
My Rating: 5/10
